    Dreaming Up A New Kitchen

It's fun to dream about how you would change things in your home.  I love to cook and entertain and find myself dreaming about the kitchen and what I'd love to do differently-- from the storage space I need for pots and pans and spices, (not to mention tupperware,)  a handy way of hiding those electric cords and chargers for home electronics, built in appliances for that lived in look and of course the layout for an efficient and functioning kitchen.  My home dates back to the late 1950's and while the kitchen has had some very minor upgrades from previous owners, it's not THE dream kitchen--the function, the style, the layout that adds up to that heart of the home.

I wanted to see how my dream could come together and wanted to share with you how that initial process works!  I spent several hours with Certified Master Kitchen and Bathroom Designer, Cynthia Pedigo, at The Kitchen Store in Los Angeles.  I was asked to bring in my kitchen measurements. The size of existing walls and windows, the height of the ceiling, the size of your current appliances, how wide is the casing and trim moulding.

My kitchen is on the smallish side so I was curious how we could open up the space without major remodeling.  What's neat is how with the use of special 3D design computer software, and a few keyboard clicks, your current kitchen can be transformed to virtually anything, and you can really see how it could come together.

Here's what happens next in step one of the dreaming process.

An important lesson learned. If you are planning to upgrade your kitchen, don't buy your appliances until you talk to a designer and figure out the space you have and the space you need.  Often homeowners do it backwards and end up paying a re-stocking fee once they have to return a refrigerator or stove that won't fit with the new cabinets.
