Earthquake Safety

If a 7 point magnitude earthquake struck right now where you live, would you know what to do? Is your home safe? Would you be prepared to not only keep yourself and your family calm and get thru it, but then survive with your emergency supplies for 5 to 7 days? The earthquake in Haiti is a reminder we all need to be ready for disasters of all kinds. Here Joe Wilke, who teaches Disaster Preparedness, as a CERT instructor (Citizen Emergency Response Team) for the City of Glendale ( CA) shares important advice on what to do before, during, and after the shaking starts!
Did You Know?
*The Kitchen is the worst place in the home to be during an earthquake – safely move to other room.
*Make your bedroom safe-- no mirrors or heavy art overhead and if quake hits while you are asleep – stay there with a pillow over your head
*Prepare yourself for being confused in the dark and asleep, should a quake strike then – store a flashlight under the mattress!
*While you may be tempted to ditch your landline phone (never ending sales calls) keep it – and make sure you have a phone that plugs into the wall – rotary is best- since cell phone towers won’t have power after a quake.
