The Big Earthquake Drill – California’s Great Shakeout
I grew up in Southern California and remember in the 70's my Mom and Dad telling me to stand in a doorway when an Earthquake hits. I remember standing in our glass sliding door that led to our patio, watching the pool splash and slosh back and forth as we stood there. We made it okay, but turns out that standing in a doorway is one of the things you ARE NOT supposed to do during a quake. You also aren't supposed to run outside, or attempt this "triangle of life" approach.
The three words to remember are, DROP, COVER and HOLD ON.
It's what millions of Southern Californians will do on Thursday at 10:21 AM on 10/21, for the Great California ShakeOut. Mark Benthien, Outreach Director with the Southern California Earthquake Center talks about the drill, and how to get ready for the next Big One, throughout the year~
